Matty Wood$ Drops the Ballad of Tony Tone Pt. 3

St. Louis native turned Chicago transplant Matty Wood$ returned with the third installment to his “Tony” series on November 28th, with a single titled “The Ballad of Tony Tone Pt. 3.”

Wood$ features his patented relaxed – almost lackadaisical – autotune vocals which have become a huge part of his sonic identity dating back to when he came on the scene in 2016.

The slow-paced beats can almost pass as chopped and screwed if they were any slower but Wood$ makes it work, drawing you in with his hypnotic, synth melodies – just the perfect smoke and vibe music. The best lounge music out right now.

“Been grinding till the sundown, my heart cold as an igloo,

From all the shit we been through, I’ve never been forgetful.

That shit is in my mental… “

If you’re unfamiliar, Wood$ started the “Tony Ballad” series on arguably his most notable project, I’ll Be Fine (2018). The track is titled “Percocet 2.0 (The Ballad of Tony) Pt. I” on that album.

Ironically, the single was not even the most well-received, as the project came with the hit singles “Sunday” and “Kelso,” which have racked in over 25 million plays on Spotify alone.

This iteration of the single’s history is much like it was on the original –  synth and vibed out, integrating the best worlds of hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul. The Ballad of Tony Tone, Pt. 2 was featured on his 2021 project Autotone.

With over 40+ million streams as an independent artist, it’s clear that Wood$ has carved out his lane in the ever growing pool of upcoming Midwestern Talent. Make sure you peep what he’s all about.
